Broken Light Fix.

How Much Does a Headlight Replacement Cost?

Short answer: $30 to $200 if you do it yourself, $100 to $400 at a shop. Here's the full breakdown so you know what to expect.

The Quick Numbers

DIY (Just the Part)

  • Halogen bulb only: $10 to $30
  • LED/HID bulb: $30 to $150
  • Aftermarket assembly: $40 to $300
  • OEM assembly: $150 to $600+

Shop (Parts + Labor)

  • Bulb swap: $50 to $100
  • Assembly replacement: $150 to $400
  • Luxury/European cars: $500 to $2,000+
  • Dealer price: Add 30 to 50%

What Affects the Price

The biggest factor is whether you need just a bulb or a whole new assembly. If the lens is cracked or the housing is damaged, you need the full assembly. If the light just burned out, a bulb swap is all you need.

Your vehicle matters too. A headlight for a 2015 Toyota Camry is going to cost way less than one for a 2020 BMW 3 Series. European and luxury cars use more expensive lighting systems.

Halogen headlights are the cheapest to replace. HID (xenon) costs more because of the ballast. LED assemblies are usually the priciest since the LEDs are built into the housing.

DIY vs. Shop: When to Do What

Most headlight replacements are genuinely easy. You pop the hood, unplug the old assembly, remove a few bolts, and swap in the new one. Takes 20 to 40 minutes for most cars.

Go to a shop if: your car requires removing the bumper to access the headlight (some newer vehicles), you're not comfortable with basic tools, or the headlight has auto leveling or adaptive features that need calibration.

Save money by buying the part yourself online and bringing it to a local shop. Many independent mechanics will install customer supplied parts at a lower labor rate than the dealer.

How to Save Money

  • Buy aftermarket. For most vehicles, aftermarket headlights work perfectly and cost 30 to 50% less than OEM.
  • Replace both sides. If one burned out, the other is probably close behind. Buying a pair is usually cheaper than two singles.
  • Compare retailers. Prices vary a lot between RockAuto, AutoZone, and Amazon for the same part.
  • Do it yourself. You'll save $50 to $150 in labor. YouTube has a video for basically every car.
